Commercial Motor – BPW urges workshops to invest in technician training
The transport and logistics services provider BPW is urging workshops to implement training programmes to address a shortage of technicians. Qualified and competent technicians are the backbone of any commercial vehicle workshops and right now the UK has a shortage of these skilled workers. The consequences of such a shortage will potentially result in longer periods of downtime and difficulty finding a workshop to complete required maintenance and servicing.
Michael Stayman, aftermarket and maintenance network manager at BPW Limited, said: “There is no official legislation in place for the training of trailer technicians, so in recent years, we have worked hard to establish a high standard of service and maintenance training that is now well-recognised within the industry.”
With experienced technicians retiring and a lack of young recruits, workshops are struggling to employ candidates with the requisite skills and qualifications. In a survey conducted by Logistics UK 54% of members responded that they had experienced challenges with hiring fitters, technicians and mechanics. This has a knock on effect on workshop productivity and BPW says this could compromise the safety and reliability of commercial vehicles.
